The best route fits your flights and the time you are willing to spend travelling. For a first week, our choice is Marrakech and Essaouira. For ten days with fewer long transfers, choose the north. To combine Fez, dunes and Marrakech, allow closer to two weeks with overnight stops along the way.

Before booking: count your nights
These examples assume arrival on day 1 and departure on the last day: 7 days mean 6 nights, 10 days mean 9 nights and 14 days mean 13 nights. Adjust for flight times. An evening arrival removes sightseeing time, while an early flight often calls for a last night near your departure point.
Morocco in 7 days: Marrakech and Essaouira
This route fits flights into and out of Marrakech. It keeps two bases and a final return night, without adding a Sahara round trip.
- Day 1: arrive in Marrakech, check in and take a nearby walk. Sleep in Marrakech.
- Day 2: medina, souks and Jemaa el-Fna, with breaks. Sleep in Marrakech.
- Day 3: a palace or garden according to your bookings, then free time. Sleep in Marrakech.
- Day 4: transfer to Essaouira; avoid a timed activity immediately on arrival. Sleep in Essaouira.
- Day 5: medina, ramparts and harbour; beach time if conditions suit. Sleep in Essaouira.
- Day 6: return to Marrakech and leave room for final shopping. Sleep in Marrakech.
- Day 7: airport transfer and departure.
If the desert is your priority, replace Essaouira with a multi-day tour after checking every stage. Avoid keeping both in the same week. Agafay offers a nearer outing from Marrakech, but does not replace Merzouga’s dunes.
Morocco in 10 days: Tangier, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Fez and Rabat
For this route, look for arrival in Tangier and departure from Rabat or Casablanca. Flying back from Tangier needs an extra return transfer, so remove a stop if necessary.
- Days 1–2: Tangier, with a medina day and a separate coastal outing. Two nights in Tangier.
- Day 3: transfer and sightseeing in Tetouan. One night in Tetouan.
- Day 4: travel to Chefchaouen and explore the medina. One night in Chefchaouen.
- Day 5: transfer to Fez; leave the evening free. First night in Fez.
- Days 6–7: Fez; spend the second day in town or visit Meknes and Volubilis if the pace suits you. Two more nights in Fez.
- Day 8: train or transfer to Rabat, then a walk. Sleep in Rabat.
- Day 9: Rabat, or transfer to Casablanca if your flight leaves there. Sleep where it best fits your departure.
- Day 10: departure.
With young children, or for an Akchour hike, remove Meknes or the Tetouan overnight and add that time to Chefchaouen. Chefchaouen to Fez is a road transfer to arrange, not a direct rail journey.
Morocco in 14 days: Fez, desert, Marrakech and Essaouira
This route assumes arrival in Fez and departure from Marrakech. Several days involve driving: ask your transport provider for estimated timings, breaks and exact overnight locations. Arrange travel before booking activities.
- Days 1–3: arrival and Fez sightseeing; Meknes is optional. Three nights in Fez.
- Day 4: road stage to Midelt. One night in Midelt to break the journey.
- Day 5: continue to the Merzouga area. One night in accommodation chosen in advance.
- Day 6: time around the dunes, a suitable activity and a second Merzouga night.
- Day 7: travel towards Tinghir or the Todra area. Stay one night along this stage.
- Day 8: continue to Ouarzazate; agree stops with your driver. One night in Ouarzazate.
- Day 9: Aït Ben Haddou then travel to Marrakech; avoid a timed evening visit. Sleep in Marrakech.
- Day 10: Marrakech sightseeing, with a second night in town.
- Days 11–12: transfer and stay in Essaouira. Two nights in Essaouira.
- Day 13: return to Marrakech for the night before your flight. Day 14: departure.
For a slower pace, replace Essaouira with two extra Marrakech nights. To avoid long road transfers, replace the desert crossing with rail-connected cities and a coastal stay.
Budget for your own trip
Add accommodation at every stop, meals per traveller, transport and activities. Fictional example for two people over 10 days: 9 nights at MAD 600 = MAD 5,400; meals at MAD 150 per person per day = MAD 3,000; transport MAD 2,000; activities MAD 1,200; buffer MAD 1,000. Total: MAD 12,600, excluding international flights. These are calculation inputs, not claims about average prices. Replace them with quotes and add excluded taxes or fees.
When should you visit Morocco?
Spring and autumn are often useful starting points for planning a circuit, but the coast, inland cities and mountains have different climates. Choose stops around the season, then check local forecasts shortly before departure. A beach stay needs different planning from an Atlas crossing.
Book transport and excursions
Check transport first, accommodation second and essential activities third. Do not compare a tour ending in Fez with one returning to Marrakech on price alone. Final transfers, included nights and meals change the full cost.

Itinerary questions
How long for a first Morocco trip?
One week suits two bases. Ten days allow a more varied regional route. Two weeks leave more room for a desert crossing. Your nights and flights remain the deciding factors.
Can you add Agadir to this route?
Yes, by replacing another stop and recalculating transport. For beach time and Taghazout, several nights work better than adding a return trip to an already full day.
